Creating the American Pride Red Heart Ornaments

This beautiful red fabric for the American Pride Heart ornament came from a favorite dress of mine which I’ve loved but outgrown. Looking closely at the red fabric, one can see a tonal floral, from a distance it’s a lovely warm red. I used the red to make myself a dress to wear around the Christmas holidays and Valentines Day as well. When I purchased it, the person cutting out the fabric was surprised that I wasn’t making a quilt, what they didn’t know was that other remnants would find their way into quilts for donation!

The lovely blue is a calico print that was a dress that belonged to my sister-in-law. She’d begun to take it apart in order to reuse it herself but she reached a point where she could no longer sew. I was offered her fabric stash with no instructions other than do what I wanted! Similar to the red fabric, from a distance, the detail of the calico is hard to see.

Adding the white, in the red, white and blue, is a print that was part of her stash. It reminds me of a print that is often used in men’s shirts, however, this is a large remnant which will find its way into various projects, including one of the heating pads for sale!

The pearl beads and foam heart providing the shape were purchased from a small, woman-own business, Ornament Girl.  The Ornament Girl site provides a free tutorial for the Basic Star pattern as well as one for learning how to create the ribbon, ideas for adding embellishments.

The American Pride Heart joins my other patriotic ornaments using the same fabrics (until I run out!) so can coordinate beautifully and harmoniously.  These are so much fun to make and coming from a military family myself, I think of those in my family who have served this country proudly!

These ornaments made by folding the fabrics and held down with several pins and should be kept away from small children and pets as they could be hazardous if played with.
